CBC Mount Edmund

Founded on 8 September 1922 in the administrative capital of South Africa, Gauteng, CBC Mount Edmund has always maintained a culture of inclusivity under the Edmund Rice tradition. CBC Mount Edmund takes pride in its longstanding commitment to inclusivity, having always welcomed pupils of all races. In 1994, this commitment was further extended to include girls, marking another milestone in the school’s progressive journey. We are the only private Catholic school that is a co-educational and a combined school in Pretoria.

History

Our College

1921

Our humble beginnings saw construction start in 1921 with a block of eight classrooms, built and furnished on the premises of the University of Pretoria campus in Hatfield. Br Mullan was sent out from Ireland to supervise the work.

1922

The building was completed in January 1922 and the College was named St Gabriel's. Brothers Hayes, Enright, Duggan, and McKenna, under the leadership of Mr Mullan, arrived in August 1922. It was decided to open the new College on the 8th of September. Fifty-six boys were admitted on the first day.

1968

In 1968 the College relocated to its present campus due to the expansion of the University of Pretoria. Once relocated, it seemed appropriate to rename it; hence it became known as CBC Mount Edmund, in honour of our founder Edmund Rice.

1991

Br McCarthy, the last Brother to head the school, lead the College from 1988 until April 1991. The College appointed its first lay headmaster, Mr D M Olivier.

1994

The College has always maintained a culture of inclusivity: it was the first boys’ school in Pretoria to open its doors to pupils from all races. In the spirit of inclusivity, the College also expanded in 1994 to include both boys and girls.

2009

On 19 January, it was with a great sense of enthusiasm and joy, that Little Mount Pre-School opened its doors. The official opening and blessing of the building and garden was held on 12 March by his Grace Archbishop George Daniel.
